Steuben Rural Electric Cooperative (SREC) is a member-owned electric cooperative dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and affordable electric service to the communities we serve. Whether you're moving into an existing home or building a new one, we're here to help make the process of establishing electric service as simple as possible.
How to Become a Member
To establish electric service with SREC, all applicants must:
- Complete a Membership Application
- Pay a $25 Membership Fee
- Pay a security deposit, if applicable
Membership applications are available by:
- Downloading and printing the application from our Member Forms page
- Visiting one of our office locations
- Calling our office at (607) 776-4161 or (800) 843-3414
Existing Service Location
An existing service location is a property where electric service has previously been connected and a meter is already installed. This includes situations such as a change in ownership or a new tenant moving into an existing residence or business.
To establish service, please provide one of the following:
- The service address where is the meter is located, or
- The meter number
Providing this information helps our Member Service Representatives locate the correct account and process your request quickly and accurately.
Electrical Inspection Requirements
If electric service has been disconnected for one year or longer, an electrical inspection may be required before service can be restored.

New Service Location
A new service location is a property where electric service has never been installed.
If you are:
- Building a new home
- Constructing a new building
- Installing a new electric service
- Requesting electric service at a location that has vener had electricity
Please contact our Line Department before construction begins.

- The steps necessary to bring electric service to your property
